A bathroom remodel is one of the best upgrades you can make to your home. You use the room every day, and a well-planned bathroom adds comfort and value when you sell. After remodeling many bathrooms around Plano and DFW, these are the tips we share with every homeowner before the first tile comes off the wall.
1. Start with how you use the room
Before choosing finishes, think about daily life. Do two people get ready at the same time? Then a double vanity matters more than a big tub. Do you rarely take baths? A walk-in shower usually gives you more space and is easier to use as you get older. Write down what bothers you about the current bathroom. That list becomes your plan.
2. Keep the plumbing where it is (if you can)
Moving the toilet, shower drain or vanity is possible, but it means opening floors and walls and adds labor. Keeping the same layout and spending that money on better tile, fixtures and glass usually gives a bigger “wow” for the same budget.
3. Waterproofing is the most important step you never see
Behind every good shower is a proper waterproofing system: a sloped shower pan, a waterproof membrane on the walls, and sealed corners and niches. Tile and grout are not waterproof by themselves. Ask your contractor exactly what system they use. This is the step that prevents leaks and mold years later.

4. Add a shower niche and a bench
A recessed niche keeps shampoo bottles off the floor and makes the shower look custom. Plan its size and height before tiling so the tile lines up nicely with the edges. A small bench or foot ledge is great for shaving and for safety.
5. Choose tile that is easy to live with
- Porcelain is dense, durable and low-maintenance. It is our first choice for most floors and showers.
- Large-format tile means fewer grout lines and less cleaning.
- Slip resistance matters on the floor and in the shower. Small mosaic tiles on the shower floor give more grip.
- Natural stone like marble is beautiful but needs regular sealing.
6. Plan lighting and ventilation
Use more than one light: an overhead light, good light at the mirror for grooming, and maybe a dimmable or LED mirror. A properly sized exhaust fan vented outside (not into the attic) removes moisture and protects your paint, cabinets and ceiling from mold.

7. Don’t forget storage
Vanity drawers, a medicine cabinet, open shelves or a tall linen cabinet keep counters clear. A clean counter makes even a small bathroom look bigger.
8. Pick the right shower glass
Shower glass is often the finishing touch that makes the whole room look modern. A frameless enclosure shows off your tile and is easy to wipe clean, while framed or semi-frameless glass is a good budget option. Glass is measured after tile is finished, so plan a little time for it. See our guide to glass types to choose the right one.
9. Think about the future
Simple choices make the bathroom safer for everyone: a curbless or low-curb shower, blocking in the walls for grab bars, a handheld shower head, and a comfort-height toilet. They look clean and modern, and they help if anyone in the family has trouble with balance.
10. Make decisions before demo day
Delays usually happen when a tile, vanity or faucet is still not chosen or is on back order. Pick everything before work starts and keep a small contingency in your budget for surprises behind the walls, especially in older homes.
Quick checklist
- Write down what you want to change and how you use the room
- Decide: tub, shower, or both
- Ask about the waterproofing system
- Choose tile, vanity, fixtures and glass before demo
- Plan lighting, outlets and an exhaust fan
- Leave a small budget cushion for surprises
